I started writing this book all the way back in 2007! After a lot of time, the story changed from being about TR's determination to do all he could in his life to make America better - consistently stating "Certainly I CAN!" after people told him he couldn't achieve something. Focusing on TR's dedication to conservation was my super-smart editor Anna Membrino's idea - and it was a smart one! I hope young readers, librarians, teachers, and parents will read this book and then go about finding more books about TR, but even more importantly I hope everyone will do what Teddy's folks told him when he was young and get outdoors and explore! America is filled with amazing parks and museums and nature to discover - honor TR and take a hike to these places!

There is a reason his face is on Mount Rushmore. This book is a great introduction to one of the most dynamic and interesting Presidents this country has had. We are now on the 45th President in Office. Most are not memorable. Most rarely have left a truly lasting impact on this nation. Teddy is one that stands out from the few memorable Presidents. His policies, his vigor, his outlook on life. "The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything." -TRThis is a man that overcame asthma, born to wealth but held the common man, the blue collar worker with high regard and would get his hands dirty working along side such. This is a man that set up the National Park Service and established the National Park system. Conservationist (though it had a slightly different meaning then). A man that was self taught on many subjects. Wrote peer reviewed books on scientific topics and regarded by experts on that topic. Supported the military and international relations. Astute thinker and very active physically. A true Renaissance Man.
I LOVE Frank Murphy books! He has a special talent for sharing facts about historical figures. As a mom of a kindergartener, first grader, and second grader, and as a first grade teacher, I find his books perfect for this age group. Usually when younger children read biographies or informational text, they remember few facts and have a very basic understanding of the text. Frank Murphy's style and syntax enable my children and students to understand and remember the historical details. Take a Hike, Teddy Roosevelt is yet another one of Frank Murphy's gifts to children's literature. Thank you, Frank Murphy for igniting my children's and students' enthusiasm for history!
Great book to introduce kids to the national park & conservation concept. It also is a nice capsule summary of Teddy's life of public service. Well illustrated, with straightforward text. Will help to Green the next generation.
We love this book, but it is admittedly preachy. Beautiful illustrations and several fun anecdotes. After reading this my daughter renamed her teddy bear "Jonathan Edwards" after the bear that lived at the White House with the Roosevelts.
