Pleasure & Privilege fleshes out the two decades that preceded the French Revolution with a fullness that leaves the explanations we all learn wanting. It's never enough to know the recital of the litany; one must feel it to capture its meaning. Olivier Bernier has done a very good job coloring what for most of us was a black and white picture. If one adds a reading of Andrew Curran's elegant biography of Diderot, it all comes together. To fail to read Pleasure & Privilege would leave one with an incomplete understanding of not only the French Revolution but all popular revolutions, to the present day. Are the yellow vests a revolution? Not yet. But they might be. The causes of that unrest are not dissimilar to those of 1789, although the degree is avowedly not yet the same. The dissatisfaction in America that saw Trump in office, the move of the UK to break from the EU, and the dissatisfaction of the peoples of the EU member states are all of a piece. To know the present, understand the past.
Dislike: At times, the writer used languge that would probably be best understood by a scholar of all things French or someone with prior knowledge of French history. I paused a few times in reading to look something up. Likes: This was a very good read, very informative and seemingly well researched. Overall, I recommend it highly for history buffs and those interested in this time period, as I am.
A very enlightening book. Fascinating information on life in France before the reign of terror. Had the King a little more understanding of social changes, his family would have had a different outcome.
The author belongs to a different era in writing history books. But I enjoyed it anyway. It’s a interesting angle on private history in the late 18thc

The author has brought to life the world views and attitudes of French court in the 1770s and 1780s. He is very gentle in his descriptions: he shows “what†and “why†of their foibles. There is a lot of background material to understand why and how these views got formed. There is little presumption of the reader knowing the mores of the time and they are nicely explained.My favorite part of the book was, unexpectedly, the description of America. Do not look for the battles and the major events: it is the fresh look of a foreigner (the French) at a new country that is so interesting. And, yes, the author explained the naïveté of their attitudes and gently corrected them using the language and understanding of modern Americans.The book can be read on multiple levels. The book is full of details and data which makes a nerd in me cry with joy. As much as this book is dedicated to emotions and attitudes, it gives a solid factual foundation (including financial) to what drove the people at the time.I learned a lot about the French court of ancien regime. The descriptions are very detailed with multiple examples. In a sense, it is a perfect Kindle book: it does not have illustrations; but searching for the pictures of the buildings and the furniture, the paintings and the room designs, the dresses and the gardens from within the text helps immensely.It is not an easy read but I enjoyed it thoroughly.
