About the Author

Katherine S. Newman is the author of a dozen books on topics ranging from urban poverty to middle class economic insecurity to school violence. No Shame in My Game: the Working Poor in the Inner City received the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Book Prize and the Sidney Hillman Foundation Book Award. Newman, who has held positions at Johns Hopkins, Harvard, and Princeton, is currently provost and professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.Hella Winston is a sociologist and investigative journalist. She has held postdoctoral fellowships in sociology at Princeton and Johns Hopkins universities and is currently a Senior Fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University. She is the author of Unchosen: The Hidden Lives of Hasidic Rebels (Beacon Press, 2005). She lives in New York City.

Great book, it is right on target with regard to the lack of qualified technical workers because for a number of years, students have been pushed to go into four year college programs, when this was not the best choice in many cases. In fact, vocational schools, community college associate degrees and certificates had been dismissed as being just for students who were "not college material". What a mistake. People have to realize that there is nothing wrong with one or two year diplomas or vocational tracks of study. Those who complete these goals often go on to be the very skilled individuals who build houses, build or repair automobiles, robots and other machinery, provide essential services and much more. In short, those who keep the things we use every day running and in good repair are harder to find and employ. We are feeling the results right now.

This book helps the reader to understand why the ubiquitous sound byte "college for all" is an abject failure in practice, rather than the panacea for socio-economic inequality."At hundreds of colleges," <50% earned more than $25K/yr (equivalent to what high school graduates earn) 10 years after enrolling, (p. 22). 17M college grads work at jobs requiring less than the skill levels associated with a bachelor's degree. When have we ever heard THAT key piece of data? Instead of pushing college (especially for those who are likely to be saddled with debt), we must realize that "technical credentials often represent a better investment." Manufacturing is now the 6th largest growth industry, and now that means skilled labor, which requires a differently prepared workforce. The authors trace the history of Career Technical Education, make the case for strengthening it, and provide helpful models from places from NJ and NY to Germany, that have implemented or improved existing programs. Mainly, it seems that companies need to be convinced of the value of apprenticeships and school districts need to be convinced of the value of technical training, not just Common Core.The chapter on math education was a succinct summary of some of Andrew Hacker's points, but his book, The Math Myth and Other Stem Delusions is a must read and excellent companion to this volume. (One interesting nugget that the authors of Reskilling did not know is that between 2010-2014, "28% of engineers and 38% of computer scientists were unemployed or holding jobs that did not need their training").This book could easily have been edited by half as it bogs down in far too much detail for the average reader, though perhaps not for policy makers. I would have liked to see more data on what happens when students prepare for a technical field that no longer exists. All in all, this has the potential to be an important book if it inspires the right people in education and industry to apply it.
